Getting to Mallorca Hotel in San Ignacio, Cayo District You can drive, rent a vehicle, take a bus, shuttle service, or fly to reach us at the Mallorca Hotel in downtown San Ignacio, Cayo District in Western Belize.
From the States, Canada,
Europe, Asia, etc. You fly into the Phillip Goldson International Airport in Lady Ville, just outside of Belize City. Getting to the Bus Station: From the airport, you can take a cab to the bus station for $25US. Yes, this is a ridiculously high fee, but it is the standard rate. If you can arrange to share this expense with other travelers, you can get a whole car of people and luggage for the same fee, but you must arrange it with other travelers before you leave the Airport building. After you land, ask around while standing in the Immigration line if anyone else needs to take a cab to the bus station. Else the cabbies will try to charge EACH person $25US! Tell the cab driver that you all are together as a group and you will only pay a single fee of $25US. Be firm. Tell them you know the fee is only $25US. If they try to tell you it will cost more then that, then go to the next cab. There are also shuttles to and from San Ignacio that you can hire for more money. We can arrange to have someone pick you up if you prepay. Contact us for pricing. When you reach the bus station, take a bus to Belmopan, or Benque. They usually leave every hour. Cost will be about $6-8BZ to San Ignacio. If you change buses in Belmopan, the next one to Benque will leave about every 45 minutes to an hour apart, so you won't have to wait very long. Tell the conductor that you are going to San Ignacio. From Belmopan to San Ignacio, the cost is $3BZ. The bus will say Benque on it's front sign. If you are backpacking, or just trying to stretch your dollars and need too be as frugal as possible, you can hitch the mile or so out to the highway from the Airport and catch the next bus to Belize City. Travelers have reported that it is usually very easy to hitch a ride, and it saves you $50BZ cab fare! Buses run pretty regular to Belize City, and from there you can catch a bus to Belmopan or Benque. Else ask a cabbie what his rate is to take you to the Lady Ville Bus stop just out to the highway. It ought to only be $3-6bz. Sometimes the last cab in line will be the only one willing to do it, since he'll be back in a few minutes, and not lose his place in the cab line and his outrageous $25US cab fare.
Renting a Vehicle: From the airport, you can rent a vehicle directly across the airport parking lot. There are several rental places there as well as in Belize City. From the airport, go out to the Northern Highway and turn left towards Burrell Boom. Several miles down the road, turn left going towards Burrell Boom and Hattieville. Stay on this road, past Burrell Boom and the Hattieville prison. Before the prison, you will also pass the turn off on the right for the Baboon Sanctuary, which is well worth the visit. Several miles past the Hattieville prison, you will come to a rotary. Take the first right on this rotary towards Belmopan. This is the Western Highway which goes past Belmopan, and will take you all the way to San Ignacio. You will also pass the Belize Zoo on your right several miles after this rotary, which is also a very highly recommended place to visit. If your flight gets in early enough, you can stop at both the Baboon Sanctuary and the Belize Zoo on your way to Mallorca Hotel and see Belizean wildlife, up close and personal. Plan on at least an hour or 2 for the Baboon Sanctuary, and 2-3 hours for the Belize Zoo. There are numerous places along the way to grab a bite to eat. * Once you reach Santa Elena, there is a diversion you need to take. It will have a sign pointing you to the right by the Social Security building. Then at the next Stop Sign, take a left, and then your first right down the steep hill, to the low bridge. Once you cross the river, make your first left by the market and football field. This takes you into the center of San Ignacio. You will need to go past the Belize Bank (don't turn left here, since Burns Ave. is a one way street), and go straight up the road between the Belize Bank on your left, and Courts on your right. Then take your next left by the Town Hall and at the rotary, before the high bridge, with the Police Station on your right, take the next left. This is Burns Ave. Mallorca Hotel is 1/2 block down on your left. You can park on the street. NOTE: Sometimes due to flooding or bridge repair, the low bridge may be out of service. If so, there will be signs up at the Social Security building directing you to go straight and a traffic light (that sometimes works!) at the high bridge directing traffic for this single lane bridge. Once you cross the high bridge, make your first right, and the Mallorca Hotel will be 1/2 block down on your left.
From Belize City: Get to the bus station, either by cab or walking, and take a bus to Belmopan, or Benque. If you are renting a vehicle from Belize City, ask for directions to get you to the Western Highway, and follow that the whole way to San Ignacio. You will go by the Belize Zoo right after Hattieville and the rotary mentioned above. Then follow the directions above once you get to Santa Elena. *
Flying: From the International Airport and the Municipal Airport (and elsewhere in Belize), you can take a flight from Maya Airways or Tropic Air to San Ignacio. Check at the terminal for their current schedule and pricing. From the airport in San Ignacio, you can catch a cab for a few dollars to Mallorca Hotel. Check for price differences between the International Airport and the Municipal Airport. Even thought it'll be the same plane, it is usually cheaper to fly from the Municipal airport. Though, with the ridiculous high cab fare of $25us, that may not make it worth it anymore to cab over to the Municipal Airport to get a better rate.
From Punta Gorda, Placencia, Independence & Dangriga: Take a James Bus to Belmopan (or any of the other buses, but James is the most reliable for Southern Belize). It will either say Belmopan or Belize City. Both stop in Belmopan. Then catch the next one to Benque. The cost from PG to Belmopan is $19BZ for a regular bus, or $22BZ for express which is worth the extra $3. Express buses leave PG at 6am and 3pm and are the Greyhound type bus with better seats and A/C, and not an old school bus like the regular buses in Belize. The Express and all buses stop in Independence/Mango Creek (where you get the water taxi to Placencia) and Dangriga. Get off in Belmopan. Then it's $3 for the bus to San Ignacio from Belmopan, which will say Benque. Travel time from Belmopan to San Ignacio is about an hour. Or you an take either Tropic Air or Maya Airways.
From Melchor, Guatemala: Once you cross the border and go thru Immigration and Customs from Melchor Guatemala into Benque, Belize, take a cab to the bus station for a few dollars, if there isn't a bus already at the border crossing. Some buses go all the way to the border, but some don't. Then take the next bus to Belmopan, Belize City or San Ignacio. All stop in San Ignacio and leave every hour and the cost is about $3BZ. A cab won't cost you much more if you negotiate them down and are traveling with several friends. You might be able to get one to do it for $3BZ each. Benque, Belize is only 10-12 miles away from San Ignacio.
From Flores/Santa Elena, Guatemala: Take a bus to the border town of Melcher, and then follow the directions above from Melchor. You can also fly into Santa Elena, from Guatemala City, Belize City and Cancun.
From the bus station in San Ignacio: After you get off the bus in San Ignacio, walk 1/4 block going up towards the Belize Bank and Courts retail store. Take a left at the Belize Bank on Burns Ave., and walk a 1/2 block until you reach the Mallorca Hotel on your right. You can see our yellow sign from this intersection. Enter the black gates underneath the Mallorca Hotel sign (look at the top of this web page so you can recognize it!), and walk upstairs to the 2nd floor to our lobby to sign in. We're the 2nd hotel on the right, after the Belize Bank, above the C@fe Cayo Internet Restaurant, directly across from the Tai San Chinese Restaurant, and diagonally down from Hannah's Restaurant.
