Seek Adventure in Belize & Guatemala

Many times we are asked to recommend which tour is the best one, if  someone could only do one. If you are in good physical condition, can swim, not afraid of the dark and tight spaces, then without reservations we'll say "ATM"! (Actun Tunichil Muknal). This is by far the best adventure you can have, if you can only have one adventure while in Belize.

You need a reputable tour operator, and a whole day to spend, since you are in the Cave for 4-5 hours going underground 350' and about 1 mile in. It takes an hour to get there by van and another 45min. to hike to the mouth of the Cave. During the rainy season, or high rains, it may be closed due to safety. If you are not sure if you are up for it, go sit at one of the local restaurants near the tour operators around 4-5 pm, sipping some cold ones, and wait for the groups to come back from the ATM Cave or any of the other  numerous adventures to be had here in Cayo, and ask them what they just experienced. Or just hang out in our lobby around that time as our guests come back from there and ask them. They'll tell you straight!

We can point you in the right direction to find the best and most reputable tour operators for the adventures that you wish to have. If you are feeling pressured to sign up "now" in a rush, and you are are feeling uneasy with that tour operator, then don't!  Find the next one. The ones we recommend are the ones that our guest have told us (and keep telling us) are good, and that we ourselves use when we go out on tours. These are the ones who we would recommend to our own close, personal friends and relatives. If you are a guest at Mallorca Hotel, then you also are considered our personal friend. Don't worry, We'll steer you right! That's part of our job. Just ask.

From Hotel Mallorca, you can access all of these adventures and more. See our Links page for reputable tour operators to book your tours or just ask us at the front desk when you arrive.

Depending on what you are looking for, and how much time you have available, here are some of our favorites (but it is by no means ALL of them!):

Easy do it yourself day trips (or half day trips):

Cahal Pech (within 1/2 hour walk from Mallorca Hotel (or a short cab/bus ride). Nice 1/2 day trip. Beautiful museum on sight.

El Pilar. Cab ride out to Bullet Tree (or bus, tho cab is preferred). Nice 1/2 day trip.

Xunanutunich. Take the Benque Bus (or a cab) to the ferry and walk to the visitors center. If you take a cab, you can stop at Tropical Wings butterfly farm on the way back. Best place to buy Mayan Crafts is by the ferry here (much cheaper than anywhere else). There is also a beautiful water falls along the way.

Canoe or Kayak on the Macal River. See our Links page for reputable Tour Operators.

Belize Zoo. From the airport, its on your way if you take rental car, shuttle, cab or bus. A must see!

Baboon Sanctuary. You'll need a rental car, so best if you are coming from the airport, or on your way back. Worth the trip and highly educational.

St.  Herman's Cave and Blue Hole National Park. You'll need a car, or to take the bus to Belmopan and then a bus south on the Hummingbird Highway. (ps. No its not the great blue hole in the ocean!). Small cave system, hiking trails, lookout tower and a great swimming cenote a few miles away. One admission price for both. Extra for the whole cave tour to hire a guide with gear.

Spanish Lookout. Take a bus from the market area to this small Mennonite community to do your shopping, and return in the afternoon also via bus. Best place to buy hardware and tools with a good shopping center at Farmers Trade Center.

Medicinal Trails. Ask at the front desk for more info. There are several to choose from.

Full Day trips:

Actun Tunichil Muknal - ATM.  What else can we say? See above, and then go do it!

Caracol. The largest Mayan Temple in all of Belize, and maybe all of Central America? Rivals Tikal, and at one time dominated it. Not as fully restored, tho. About 1.5 hours away, on a rough dirt road. Only if you have a 4x4 rental could you make it by yourself, else hook up with a tour group. A mind blowing experience!

Any of the other caves, such as Barton's Creek, Rio Frio, etc. These are best with a reputable tour operator. Also Cave Tubing, Horse Back Riding, Birding, Nature Walks, etc.

Longer Excursions:

Tikal. If you are on a low budget you can take the bus to Flores (or Santa Elena, Guatemala), and stay overnight and see Tikal the next day instead of trying to make it a day trip. You can go through a reputable tour operator, but it'll cost you more in the long run.  But if you are on limited time, then a reputable tour operator is the best way to go. Shuttle Vans leave from the hotels early, so you can still catch the sunrise!

A nice longer trip is spend a night in Flores (or right on the Tikal campground) and see Tikal the next day. Then hop a bus to Rio Dulce, and stay overnight in Fronteras. Then either catch a boat to Livingston (A Garifuna community in  Guatemala! - more like Jamaica) on the Rio Dulce, and spend some time there, before catching a water taxi to Punta Gorda, Belize. Or take another bus to Puerto Barrios where you can also catch a water taxi back to Punta Gorda. Then after spending time, in Punta Gorda, catch a bus or flight back up thru Belize.
